2dF Status
In October 2023, the Y axis of the gripper gantry started to jitter and lose its position. Depending on circumstances, the problem could potentially lead to a catastrophic loss of fibres. It was decided to take 2dF out of service.
With assistance from former AAO staff, the Observatory was able to get 2dF functional in early July 2024. Since then, a number of tests have been carried out. This included a test on sky on 26 August 2024.
2dF is now being more extensively refurbished. This major undertaking is updating both hardware and software elements of the instrument, with the goal of ensuring 2dF's availability into the future. Despite numerous unanticipated challenges, the refurbishment is progressing and we expect 2dF to undergo system verification in 2026. Once on-sky performance has been confirmed, 2dF will be made available for use with AAOmega and HERMES through the normal Call for Proposals process.
